Information Needs during Flood Events in New Orleans

A qualitative research project focused on understanding informational access gaps during flood emergency events.

Information Access Qualitative Methods Flood Visualization

Overview

This research examines how residents of New Orleans access, interpret, and act upon flood-related information during emergency events. By understanding these information needs and gaps, we can design better communication systems and visualizations that support informed decision-making during crises.

Research Questions

  • What information do residents seek during flood events, and where do they look for it?
  • What gaps exist in current flood information systems?
  • How can flood visualizations be designed to be more accessible and actionable?

Methodology

This project uses qualitative research methods including semi-structured interviews with New Orleans residents who have experienced flood events. We analyze interview data to identify patterns in information-seeking behavior and unmet needs.

Current Status

This research is ongoing. We are currently conducting interviews and developing recommendations for improved flood information systems.
